I was a tiny tot in the seventies, and in my late teens and early twenties during the nineties, so this retro birthday card SVG design with a cool groovy feel was really fun for me to design and brought back a lot of memories and nostalgia for my childhood and youth!
These retro designs really are bold, beautiful and just full of joy that wants to leap about and spread itself around - at least, that's how this groovy retro look feels to me so I hope that I've been able to convey some of that in my retro birthday card template - and I hope that you can send some happiness, joy, and love with the card you make, too!
You can make my retro birthday card template with your Cricut or similar cutting machine - you just need the standard Cricut cutting mat (not the specialist card mat) as the template cuts flat using three A4 or Letter-sized sheets of cardstock and has lines to score to create the folds for the card and envelope.
You will need to either score with your cutting machine, or delete the score lines from the template and score by hand (with a blunt point like a knitting needle or similar). I include full instructions for how to set up the template to get everything to score correctly in Cricut Design Space on this page (you will receive a link in the PDF included in your download) - I also discuss scoring tools plus scoring by hand on that page too - plus, you will likely still find it useful for how to set things up with your own machine, even if you're not using a Cricut machine.
Once everything's been cut and scored, I have a craft tutorial here for folding and assembling the card and envelope.
If you use the SVG as-is in Cricut Design Space, your finished card will end up around 12 x 12 cm (approximately 4.75 4.75 inches) with an envelope that's a little bit bigger.
The retro-style Happy Birthday card template comes in yellow for the outer card, a bright green for the inner card, and a warm pink for the envelope - see the images above and below...
I think if you want the full-on groovy vibe for your retro-style birthday card, you need to do your best to pick groovy retro colours for your project too!
Groovy retro colours are bright and bold - but still have a certain warmth to them - I always think of them as 'Scooby Doo' colours (the series that originally aired in the early seventies). So there's green, orange, purple, teal, and yellow...
The colours should be of a similar tone (mid tone - not too light, too dark, or too fresh). The slight 'clashing' of colours is what gives the groovy colour palette its energy - so go with it, embrace the vibrancy and have fun!
There's also a groovy retro colour palette with pink - this focuses on a warm pinks, oranges, and browns. So I created a card for you, below, that includes these colours and gives a slightly different feel to the card...
The yellow and green card above is created with my Cricut Maker and:
