Nature Journaling in Everyday Life
Gentle Ways to Notice Nature

By Lotti Brown

Explore nature journaling as a part of everyday life - find gentle inspiration for journaling at home, through different seasons, and inspiring simple moments of nature noticing as you go about your day.

Nature journaling doesn't have to be saved for holidays, long walks or perfect weather. In fact, the seeds for some of the most meaningful pages are sown in the middle of ordinary life – noticing while looking out of the window with a cup of tea, spending a few quiet minutes in the garden, or watching the changing sky at the end of a busy day.

These articles are all about helping nature journaling fit gently into everyday life. They share simple nature journaling ideas…

Rather than striving for perfect sketchbook pages or waiting for the ideal moment, they're an invitation to notice the natural world wherever you are, whatever the season, and however much time or energy you have.

Because nature isn't waiting for the perfect day – it's quietly carrying on around us, ready to be noticed.

There was a time when I thought nature journaling only ‘counted’ if I took my sketchbook out on a proper walk. I imagined long, uninterrupted afternoons in nature, with plenty of time to draw, paint and write.

My first few nature journaling sessions, taking some time out in the immediate days and weeks after my dad died, were more like that. And that quiet healing time with nature was very important to me…

But soon enough, life settled back into its normal routines. That's when I realised I needed to keep the nature journaling going - not as something separate from my life, but as part of it.

I needed to find a way for nature journaling to become part of everyday life. Most days, now, my journal pages are woven into ordinary moments instead. A photograph taken on my morning walk becomes an evening sketch and journal page…

Or a bird visiting my little garden or recorded on my morning walk is noted down into my bird notebook while I’m waiting for the kettle to boil…

Sometimes all I have time for is writing down the colour of the sky before bed – or simply carrying a series of small ‘noticings’ with me as I go about my day – perhaps they make it into a future nature journal page, perhaps they don’t, but they all matter.

I've realised that these small moments aren't a compromise - they're what make nature journaling part of my life. They help me notice more, wherever I am, and remind me that building a relationship with nature doesn't depend on perfect circumstances.

That's what this section is all about. Finding gentle ways to keep noticing, even when life is busy, the weather changes, or you only have a few spare minutes.

I've gradually realised that nature journaling isn't really about filling sketchbooks. It's about learning to notice more.

The pages are lovely to look back on, but the real gift is how they change the way I experience the world.

Whether you're looking for nature journaling ideas at home or ways to keep noticing through changing seasons, here are my tips and inspirations to help you…

Nature Journaling from Home

Nature journaling doesn't always mean heading out into the countryside with a sketchbook under your arm.

Discover simple ways to connect with nature from home, whether that's through your garden, a window view, treasured nature collections, photographs, wildlife cameras or even favourite memories.

A gentle reminder that nature can be found much closer than we sometimes imagine.

Whether you have five quiet minutes, an afternoon to wander, or simply a moment to look up at the sky, I hope these articles encourage you to keep noticing.
