The Small Tortoiseshell butterfly (Aglais urticae) is one of our most common and popular British butterflies and can be seen from early Spring to late Autumn in gardens. The caterpillars like eating nettles, so if there are any nettles nearby, you might well spy a tortoiseshell butterfly. You might also see them hibernating over winter in a shed or cool cupboard.

Britain used to have a Large Tortoiseshell butterfly, too, which was common in woodlands but is now considered extinct in Britain (aside from a few intermittent visitors from Europe where it still lives). One of the main food plants for the Large Tortoiseshell butterflies was the Elm, so it's perhaps the decimation of the British elm tree population which affected this beautiful butterfly.

Small Tortoiseshell butterflies are widespread in Britain but in recent years numbers have fallen and there is some concern about conservation.

I think they're worth celebrating and that's why I've so enjoyed painting and drawing my Tortoiseshell butterfly artwork!

Creating my Tortoiseshell Butterfly Art

I created my Small Tortoiseshell butterfly art from my own hand-painted butterfly and hand-drawn flowers.

I painted my Tortoiseshell butterfly illustration in watercolour and coloured pencils to get depth of colour and texture and detail in the butterfly's wings and it's beautiful furry body...

It's been put together digitally in Adobe Illustrator with my pen drawings of flowers and a colourful yellow background to create my final artwork.
