Understanding Your Artistic Adventure...
Understand where you are in your own artistic adventure and start to make more meaningful art…
The aim of this page is to help you start to understand your own artistic journey.
This is important as an awareness of what you like, or don’t like, what attracts you, what you’re curious about can help you to make the right decision about what to focus on in your art…
So that you’re not wasting time drawing stuff that you’re not interested in, or developing techniques that don’t do it for you.
This will also make your art more enjoyable for you, more meaningful, and more fulfilling.
Perhaps there are particular subject matters, themes, or questions that you want to explore, things you’re curious about...
What's YOUR meaning..?
What’s meaningful to you in your art is meaningful to you in your life too.
And your art can help you to explore this, find out more about these important questions - and in doing so, you can understand yourself better.
I knew for years and years that I really liked drawing nature but I never thought about why this might be…
Then I started asking myself why – what was I interested in, what attracted me, how was I feeling, and what was I trying to ‘get’ or ‘capture’ through these things that I felt drawn towards?
This is likely not a quick kind of question to find a full and truthful answer to – and the questions and their answers will also likely change and evolve as you do too.
It took me maybe two to three years of thinking and asking myself to understand that, for me, drawing nature was all about trying to capture the energy of nature and the natural world.
Now, in my personal history, I have experiences of very low energy and debilitating fatigue (through Chronic Fatigue Syndrome/Post-Viral Syndrome) so it’s natural that I would wish to try and capture the energy I felt around me in nature.
It took me a while longer to work out that what I was really trying to capture was actually how I felt when I was in nature – the balance, calm, and positivity of that moment feeling grounded, present, mindful, aware – however you wish to term it...
It was those moments where I stopped, used my senses, became aware, and noticed the nature around me that I wanted to capture, depict, and share, firstly through my artworks and now through my Drawing Your Way project, after realising that these feelings I have when in nature are universal and can help other people too.
What does YOUR art mean to YOU?
Art is now the vehicle through which I can connect with nature and through which I can feel balanced and calm – a focus and a reminder for feeling present and being ‘mindful’ (aware and ‘awake’ for my life) and a prompt for my creativity.
That’s my journey and it’s still evolving. Yours likely won’t be exactly the same. So I encourage you to discover and understand your own personal artistic journey to help you know what to focus on to make more meaningful art that is enjoyable and fulfilling for you.
I’ve got an exercise to help you with this, below…
It’s not a one-off exercise. It’s a practice that will evolve as you do – but this is a pretty good place to start.
Try to reflect on the questions in the exercise below. Perhaps some won’t seem relevant for you, and perhaps more questions will come up for you too. That’s okay.
Sometimes, we just need to sit with the questions for a while and we don’t actually need the answers just yet…
