Contemporary gannets art by Lotti Brown - ‘A Gaggle of Gannets’ - digital art created from pen and ink drawings and paintings…
Just like my recent puffin art, I was inspired to create this gannets artwork after a holiday along the north-east coast of Britain where I was lucky enough to watch gannets alighting on Bass Rock (through a telescope).
It was a cool thing to see and it reminded me, too, that I’ve also watched gannets (also known as solan, solan goose, or solant bird) very close to home and at a much closer distance at RSPB Bempton Cliffs. I think gannets are perhaps a little overlooked (nevermind the difficulties of the ‘greedy gannet’ reputation!) because from a distance they can just look like white seabirds or seagulls… but they’re actually an amazingly beautiful bird with a beautiful golden head, a brilliant blue eye, blue-grey beak, and very unusual green stripes on their legs and feet! They dive-bomb headlong into the sea to catch fish and can also fly at over 35mph and have a wing-span that can reach more than 6ft across! Huge seabirds!
The collective nouns for a grouping of gannets are a ‘plunging’ of gannets, a ‘gannetry’ of gannets, a ‘newspaper syndicate’ of gannets, or a ‘company’ of gannets - although any of these might perfectly apply to my gannets, I decided to name the artwork ‘A Gaggle of Gannets’ as to me they look just like they’re gaggling together, laughing, chatting, gossiping…
I think the centre gannet is busy boasting or telling a story, “And then I said…” - while his audience of gannets look on - enthralled or disapproving… what do you think? From Drawing to Digital!
I created my gannets art by first drawing my gannets in pen and marker, each bird separately, then scanning them into the computer, importing them into Adobe Illustrator and arranging and combining them with a hand-painted ink background to create this artwork digitally…
I really love the sense that we’re interrupting something going on here - a tale being told, a boast of heroic feats perhaps? Who knows!
It’s a lively and colourful artwork with a very modern feel: ‘A Gaggle of Gannets’.
It’s available as an art print, cushion, duvet cover, bag, fashion tops and scarves, mugs, phonecases and much, much more in my Redbubble store - also with fast and affordable worldwide delivery from selected locations (plus no customs charges).
