Coal Tit Art - Behind the Scenes

Sweet coal tit artwork ‘Coal Tit and Teasels’ by Lotti Brown

‘Coal Tit and Teasels’ art by Lotti Brown

We have had a pair of tiny coal tits in our garden for the past year and I love to see them appear on the tree branches, sweep down quickly to feed, and then dart quickly away again.

Although not as colourful as the blue tit, they’re beautiful little birds, very sweet to see, and I’m very excited to have done them a little artwork so that they can join in the teasely fun!

I love the action pose - in flight! It gives a really dynamic look to the artwork.

The colours, too, are some of my favourite - very natural but rich, warm, and really beautiful with the blends of yellows, blues, greens, greys and purples with earthy browns and beiges.

I created the artwork with a combination of pen and marker drawings on paper, ink-painting on fabric, and then all put together digitally in Adobe Illustrator to create the final artwork.

I love the action pose of this beautiful little bird and the gorgeous soft colours and textures in the artwork. It’s a perfect matching pair for the Blue Tit and Teasels artwork or you could make a trio with the harvest mouse piece, too.

You can buy my ‘Coal Tit and Teasels’ art work as a print on paper or canvas in my art store (framed and unframed options are available).

It’s also available as a scarf, duvet cover, cushion, phone case, bag, mug, fashion top, and more in my Redbubble store here…

‘Waxwing Winter Feast’ - colourful and contemporary waxwing art by Lotti Brown

I think the waxwing is one of the most unusual and colourful birds that we have as a visitor to Britain… and one that I’ve very rarely seen…

In some years they are very abundant winter visitors to the east of the country, feasting on berries but they seldom seem to appear close to me… but I still live in hope that one day I’ll suddenly happen across a tree or bush festooned in colourful waxwings!

My artwork was inspired by a beautiful winter photo by Dee Carpenter (used under license) of a waxwing enjoying a rowan berry feast, that I’ve used as the basis for my artwork…

Here’s how I created my waxwing artwork from my pen and marker drawings, with a little digital help from Adobe Illustrator.

Beautiful blue, 'Darling Delphiniums' artwork...

'Darling Delphiniums' colourful floral artwork by Lotti Brown

I just love the beautiful blue of delphinium flowers - they're like nothing else in the garden and stand out like towering blue beacons with that brilliantly bold mix of blue and purple...

Awesome flowers - and I knew I wanted to include the pure and simple joy of seeing delphiniums in my 'Joyful Blooming' floral art collection.

Behind the Scenes of the Artwork

Here's how I created my delphinium artwork from my individual flower drawings that I put together in Adobe Illustrator to create the final artwork piece...

A taste of summer and the completed Delphiniums artwork

I really wanted to make the most of the delphiniums' beautiful purple and blue colours in my artwork but also to put into my art a little of the sizzling heat we experienced in the Summer 2018 heatwave in the UK.

Detail from the artwork

Detail from the artwork

The air feels so dry and still that it almost crackles and the earth is parched - the flowers still seem to bloom with all their might so that their beauty can carry on through another summer and continue to survive the elements...

My 'Darling Delphiniums' art print is available as framed and unframed prints and canvases from my online store.

Mystical Magpie and Maple - Behind the Scenes of the Artwork

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, inspiration, nature art, bird art, wildlife artCharlotte Brown

Beautiful magpie artwork in pinks, golden-yellows, teals, blues and purples...

Mystical Magpie and Maple artwork by Lotti Brown

I created this magpie artwork to celebrate this special bird that has a bit of a reputation...

One for sorrow
Two for joy
Three for a girl
Four for a boy
Five for silver
Six for gold
Seven for a secret never to be told....

Yes - the magpie comes with a reputation... and a rhyme that all schoolchildren knew off by heart in my day...

We used to salute or doff our cap to a single magpie to ward off bad luck...

And if with a companion call out, "Look! A magpie!" Then mutter quickly, "Seen by two, never comes true..."

Perhaps it's just the magpie's reputation for stealing your shiny belongings, which it hides in its nest...?

But more than one magpie was always a thrill to see and seemed to herald good fortune of some kind...

And in many parts of the world - including in China, Korea, Native America, and many parts of Europe - the magpie is a symbol of happiness and good fortune and any sight of a magpie is warmly welcomed...

So it's certain that the magpie does have that special, mystical air that causes so many populations to set him apart from other birds - and the magpie itself is a very intelligent bird - clever, resourceful and a fantastic mimic... no wonder people have always seen the magpie as something very special.

And you can barely see a more striking bird in our British landscape and gardens... large and with a very distinctive stripe - there's no missing such a handsome and dramatic-looking bird.

Detail from the artwork

So my artwork is to celebrate this special bird, it's dramatic look and its mystical reputation, but particularly to see beyond that, too - to see this very intelligent and resourceful bird, that can even recognise and understand its reflection in a mirror - (the only bird and one of very few creatures that can do so). A bird that makes a monogamous bond for life with their partner and can mourn their dead...

No wonder the magpie is recognised across the world as special...!

I really love the colours in my magpie artwork - the familiar, striking plumage against the rather unexpected soft pinks and ochre yellows that I hope will inspire you to look beyond the reputations and superstitions of the magpie, and look with respect at the capabilities and nature of this truly remarkable bird itself, instead...

Love this footstool!

craft projects, fabric, inspiration, nature artCharlotte Brown

I love to see what you've been inspired to create with my fabrics - and I've been very excited this week to see what the very talented Karen made with a custom fabric print of my Lapwing artwork - a gorgeous footstool...

Take a look - it's awesome, isn't it?

Stunning - lovely lapwing footstool created with a custom fabric print

Thank you so much to Karen for sharing her creation with me, and also for allowing me to share it with you, too. :)

Behind the Scenes of a Fabric Collection

inspiration, sneak peek, fabric, behind the scenes, drawings, nature artCharlotte BrownComment

I'm still busy working away on the live briefs set for us by the Art & Business of Surface Pattern Design Ultimate Portfolio Builder course, so I thought I'd share a quick behind the scenes look at what I've been up to with just one of the briefs...

The brief is for a collection of fabrics, to be presented to a quilting fabric company in the UK, Dashwood Studio,  I've been working mine around the theme of Japanese Garden - and I've been busy drawing the motifs and elements to make up the designs within the fabric collection...

My own photos of magnolias and cherry blossom are invaluable as inspiration

Beautiful flowers and foliage from a Japanese garden - from my own photos, or plucked from my own garden....

Foliage is just as important as flowers in a Japanese garden

I am working with a limited colour palette (limited in quantity of colours, but I am free to choose the colours themselves) and have been working hard to get a variety of colours in the collection, plus get the tones across the collection just right...

It's challenging but in a really great way - I'm having fun...   :)

Hopefully I will be back to share the final designs with you before too long, as well ~ Lotti :)

UPDATE: 4 September 2015 - you can now see the final designs here...
