Hollyhocks Art - Behind the Scenes

Bold and colourful floral art - 'Hollyhocks' art print - bringing you colour and joy as part of my 'Joyful Blooming' theme...

'Hollyhocks' art print - vibrant floral art by Lotti Brown

With this artwork, I wanted to create the lift of happiness you feel when you see vibrant, beautiful flowers in the sunshine, against a brilliant blue sky...

The artwork was inspired by a couple of photos I took of beautiful pink hollyhocks in a garden - I loved these so much that I'd had one of the photos as a screen-saver on my phone for years...

I create my art from my pen-and-ink drawings. Take a look behind the scenes with me...

Final Hollyhocks artwork - colourful and joyful nature!

Final Hollyhocks artwork - colourful and joyful nature!

I love the really bright, vibrant colours in this artwork - and the joyful, carefree attitude of the flowers - open, blooming confidently, proud and jostling for space with each other, ready to show off their beauty.

That's something I'm trying to explore for myself with this series of Joyful Blooming artwork - being proud and confident to step forward as myself and show myself boldly...

But also because they're flowers, and they're beautiful, and to see them opens my heart and makes my soul sing...

So maybe you can relate to that too?

Horse Art - Behind the Scenes

Ideal for horse lovers - 'The Horse with the Golden Mane' - colourful and contemporary horse art prints in a vibrant lilac purple...

Horse art by Lotti Brown - 'The Horse with the Golden Mane'

Horse art by Lotti Brown - 'The Horse with the Golden Mane'

When I was a little girl I simply adored horses. I'm scared of heights so I've always found riding them a little bit terrifying, but I love to admire them from the safety of the ground - and this is such a handsome black and white horse with a stunning golden mane...

In this piece, I wanted to celebrate the beauty of this majestic creature - one of humankind's animal friends for thousands of years. Humans have a very close bond with horses and it's simply wonderful to see people and animals working together.

I showed this very handsome black and white horse against a purple evening sky, which really sets off his beautiful golden mane. Stunning!

I use my own ink drawings and put them together digitally to create the final artwork piece.

Raven and Oak Artwork - Behind the Scenes

A mysterious and powerful bird and the king of the trees - my artwork with a dramatic raven in an oak tree...

Raven and Oak, artwork by Lotti Brown

I originally created my raven artwork for a guitar scratchplate idea...

Raven guitar scratchplate

I liked it so much that I decided to create a whole artwork around the raven. I wanted to put this magnificent bird, often connected with myth and legend, into an equally impressive setting, so I chose a splendid oak tree, king of the trees...

Here's how I created the artwork...

I love how the artwork is so bold and bright, as truly befits such a magnificent pairing of bird and tree... full of colour, energy, and life!

Wren & Physalis Artwork - Behind the Scenes

I wanted to share a little bit about my 'Winter Glimpses: Wren & Physalis' artwork...

Winter Glimpses: Wren & Physalis - by Lotti Brown

I created this work in late winter, and was inspired by a chilly walk alongside beds of reeds, when I caught a glimpse of a tiny wren, hopping low amongst the foliage.

A really lovely thing to see, and it really put a smile on my face, and made me appreciate how there's still life and interest in the deepest, darkest winter days.

We do have a little wren living in our front garden some years, but they're such shy little things that it's still pretty rare to catch sight of one, and it's always a thrill.

The winter is a great time to spot one, when they're out and about hunting for food, and there's fewer leaves and foliage about, for them to hide amongst.

Summer Floral Art Prints - A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)

Behind the scenes of my floral art print 'A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)'

Now the spring is finally here I'm looking forward with hope to the hot sunshine days of summer...

Last summer we had some gorgeously hot days - one of which was the inspiration behind my vibrant summery floral art print 'A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)'.

A Day in the Sun (Geraniums) floral art print

It was created on one of these (rare in Britain!) sun-soaked days - when the world feels a little bit hazy - all buzzy with bees, heady with floral scents and where you just long to get out of the house or office and head to the nearest park or garden...

I'd been drawing some of the pretty flowers in my cottage garden - hardy geraniums and salvias - I love them for the scent of the leaves, and for the way they grow enthusiastic, straggly and free to fill my garden with life and colour...

Click the images below to see them larger...

Getting my drawings vectorised and into the computer programme

Once I got them scanned into the computer, the only possible colour I could choose to convey the sunshine of a fantastically hot summer's day was this brilliant, shining yellow...

Yellow for sunshine and summer

I had to work hard on the colours to make them sizzle with summer heat though...

Stronger colours help to convey the heat of summer

I think the more saturated colours help to show the intense heat, and create the shimmer of colour, buzzing, heat and scent that pervades the senses in a lively summer cottage garden...

Final artwork on the screen

Detail of the flowers in the artwork, showing the intricate, hand-drawn linework

I absolutely love the hand-painted fabric artwork that I chose to use for the background of this piece... full of colour and summer promise - I think the marks look just like flowers in the cottage garden, or little butterflies and bees zipping about in the air...

Hand painted fabric used subtly as a background for the design.

I really hope that my geraniums and salvias artwork transports you into that summer garden - stop a while, put your feet up, sip a nice cuppa - breathe in the scent of the flowers, listen to the bees, and above all let your eyes soak in the colourful experiences of summer....

Tropical Design Trend - Behind the Scenes

I've been working to design for future print and pattern trends coming in Spring-Summer 2017 - and I've been looking at brilliantly coloured tropical trends with the design community at 'Pattern Observer'

I'm going to take you behind the scenes, just a little bit, and show you how some of these designs came about...

Tropical Jungle collection by Lotti Brown - click on the image to see a larger version

I decided to create a small tropical collection, 'Tropical Jungle', for the theme, with my motifs centred around some fantastically colourful orchids I have at home...

Gorgeous orchids were one of the main inspirations to this collection

I drew these many times from every different angle, and drawing both the individual blooms, and whole stems, and separate leaves and foliage to create enough motifs for the collection...

I also wanted some birds in my jungle, so drew some tropical-looking birds from artist source-books, so that I could also add these into the design...

Bird and flower drawings for my tropical collection

Although the colours you see here usually don't end up in the final design, I like to colour my drawings as this gives depth and texture to the design, and often creates the starting point for my colour palette, too.

How some of my orchid drawings developed into the completed pattern

In the image above, you can see how my drawings are scanned into the computer, in colour, then arranged about the screen, using Adobe Illustrator, to create the pattern.

You can see how the original colours (left) were enhanced to become the very vibrant hues in the later part of the design process (right)...

Individual colours, and the whole colour palette, can be tweaked many times until I'm happy with the effect.

I built out the collection with drawings of peace-lilies, and  the foliage of the 'lipstick plant', (both of which I have as houseplants at home) to create a collection of patterns that I felt continued the theme but gave a bit of variety too.

So here are the finished designs - click on the images below to see them larger...

Exhibition by Kaffe Fassett & The Quilters' Guild Collection

At the weekend I was lucky enough to get to a wonderful, and very colourful, exhibition in my local city by the very talented designer and quilter, Kaffe Fassett, in association with The Quilters' Guild Collection...

Visiting the 'Ancestral Gifts' exhibition at the Quilt Museum & Gallery in York UK

I have been a big fan of Kaffe Fassett's design work ever since I was a little girl, captivated by the colour combinations. I went to see the very colourful Kaffe Fassett exhibition at the American Museum in Bath while I was on holiday, last year, so it was a real thrill for me to get to see his work again, just down the road from home...

The exhibition at the Quilt Museum in York, is called 'Ancestral Gifts' and showcases 15 historic quilts from the Quilters' Guild Collection, selected by Kaffe Fassett, together with the new quilt he has designed from each of these, in his own design fabrics.

Colour & design inspiration at the Quilt Museum in York

It was very interesting to see how he interpreted each design in his own way, and to look at the ways the designs were similar to, and also different from, the historic originals...

Of course, the stunning colours of the Kaffe Fassett fabrics were in plentiful supply, and this certainly provided a contemporary touch to the traditional inspirations...

Click on the images below to see larger versions...

An awesome exhibition - and wonderful to see so many colourful pieces, and their historic inspirations, all gathered together in one building - I went around several times trying to pick a favourite, but couldn't narrow it down! I highly recommend a visit if you get the chance...

Ancestral Gifts runs at the Quilt Museum in York (UK) until 5th September 2015

The Quilt Museum is then taking the exhibition  on tour to the USA, under the name 'Blanket Statements' and will be visiting:

International Quilt Festival, Houston - 29th October to 1st November 2015

Michener Museum, Doylestown, PA - 14th November 2015 to 21st February 2016

San Jose Quilt Museum - March 2016, exact dates to be announced

The exhibition also gathers together inspirational pieces, and some original sketches and design artwork

Experiment with Pebeo Mixed Media Special Effects Paints

It's just been my birthday, and my husband got me some new paints to play with, so I thought I would share my first experiment with my new Pebeo Mixed Media Fantasy Prisme paint...

Playing with paints :)

The paints are in beautiful shimmering colours, and dry to create really interesting honeycomb shapes, which I hope I will be able to use to create textured interest and backgrounds in my surface pattern designs (you probably won't see them in such a direct form as this again by the time I've played around with them in my designs... but you never know!)

But anyway, this was my first experiment with the paints, all about having some fun and seeing how it all works...

If you want to have a go yourself, you'll need to clear a little bit of space, and work on a flat surface.

The paints are thick, so I chose to work on a sturdy foam board, and put it into a wooden pebeo paint tray (which you could work directly onto) for ease of lifting and carrying whilst waiting for the paint to dry...

As they are multi-surface compatible, it is possible to work directly onto shiny/non-absorbent surfaces like my foam board, metals, glass or ceramics.

My first experiment with Pebeo Fantasy Prisme paints

I used Cerne Relief paste outliner to create little pools into which I could pool the paint (it's very liquid so needs containing somehow) - surprisingly hard to keep a steady hand (more practice required)!

Then used pipettes to drop the paint onto the surface - you use quite a lot of the paint, and it is quite strong-smelling...

As the pools of paint dry, shapes start to form...

It takes several hours before the paint is 'dry' (tacky to touch still)... and a whole three days before it's totally hard.

But the effects are stunning...

Fantasy Prisme special effect paint makes honeycomb shapes as it dries

And here (below) is the experiment, totally dry... I love it...

Experimental special effects and textures

I can't wait to have another play with my paints - try more colours, and having tried out several different techniques for mixing colours together in my initial experiment, I've got some ideas for which effects I like best, and which, perhaps, don't work so well.

Pebeo also do a 'Fantasy Moon' paint collection, which creates hammered and marbled special effects, as well as other mixed media paints (none of which I have tried... yet).

More paint play soon I hope, but next week I think the only paint will be emulsion - we have a week off planned, to pull out our existing kitchen, and fit a new one (retaining and repainting the cabinet doors), which will also contain a cubby-hole that's going to become my new home office - I'm currently under the stairs with my computer, but in my new space I'm going to have a window, which will make me very happy :)
