Portrait of a Gray Langur monkey - contemporary wildlife art by Lotti Brown

Gray Langur art by Lotti Brown

This piece of wildlife art was inspired by a beautiful photo of a Gray Langur monkey. It’s such a wonderful and compelling animal portrait that I immediately wanted to make an artwork from it and was able to license the original photo to do so.

This is a Gray Langur monkey, also known as a Hanuman Langur, Indian Langur, or Sacred Langur. It’s an Old World monkey that’s widespread across the Indian subcontinent including: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Nepal, and the Himalayas.

These monkeys live in all kinds of habitats, from woodlands and forests, rainforests, deserts, mountains, cities, and even in temples. They eat all kinds of foods including leaves, pine needles, pine cones, mosses, ferns, lichens, and bamboo foliage, so I was pretty much able to team my little Langur monkey up with the background of my choice…

I chose to give him a background of bamboo as I have some in the garden that I can draw from life and I thought I could make very simple line drawings of the bamboo.

I wanted to make this a very simple artwork, with the focus on the Gray Langur monkey in the way of a portrait so that his facial expression was important… what is he thinking?

So I decided to keep the tones and colours very soft and neutral, to complement the beautiful grays in the monkey’s fur, and also to reflect the soft, contemplative gaze of this little animal.

Here’s how I created my Gray Langur portrait from my pen and marker drawings, scanned in and given the digital treatment in Adobe Illustrator…

This is something a little bit different for me, but I’ve absolutely adored creating it. Zebras are so beautiful and their stripes are just amazing. So great to draw out… but it was a little bit confusing and did require a lot of concentration!

Great Dane Art - Behind the Scenes

Colourful great dane art print with flowers...

Great Dane artwork by Lotti Brown

Great Dane artwork by Lotti Brown

I loved creating my gorgeous Great Dane art - remarkable dogs - so large and impressive, yet they're real gentle giants.

In our village we used to see the Great Dane, Daisy, running alongside her owner's bicycle - I'll tell you, it was quite a sight!

I wanted my artwork to show the beauty and mild-mannered nature of this huge hound. Slightly intimidating through sheer size, but every Great Dane I've ever met has been essentially friendly and gentle.

So I wanted to include warm colours and pretty flowers to show the unexpected, softer side of this dog...

Highland Cow Art - Moo!

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, inspiration, pet art, shoppingCharlotte Brown

This colourful highland cow art print makes a cherished gift for that special someone who loves to spot highland cattle...

Colourful Highland Cow art by Lotti Brown

Colourful Highland Cow art by Lotti Brown

I created this artwork for my husband, who loves highland cows. We love to see them when we holiday in Scotland, and even spot them in our home county of Yorkshire from time to time.

They're always a thrill to see, and seem to be from another time - a bit like a woolly mammoth version of a cow, all long hair and horns... beautiful creatures, who seem very gentle and sweet-natured.

I was inspired to create the artwork by a chance photo by a friend. She found her highland cow in the south of England, cooling down in a shady forest pool...

As soon as I saw this beautiful photo, I immediately wanted to draw the cow - those beautiful curvy horns and all that lovely long hair!

So I set to, knowing it would be the perfect gift for my wonderful husband...

I love the colours that seem to speak of hills, heather, and bracken...

And the beautiful sky effect which makes me think of the Northern Lights - a reasonably regular sight in the far north of Scotland, but one I've not (yet!) been lucky enough to see.

This is a beautiful, peaceful artwork - a highland cow taking the time to stop and stare - so much beauty in nature!

My husband loved his surprise gift, by the way! Do you know someone who would love to receive this, too?

Cute and Colourful Westie Art 'Westie Fun'

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, inspiration, pet art, shoppingCharlotte Brown

Colourful and lively, a fun Westie art print of a cute dog, Mac.

A fantastic gift idea for a special Westie owner - or celebrate your own Westie in style...

West Highland Terrier art 'Westie Fun' by Lotti Brown

West Highland Terrier art 'Westie Fun' by Lotti Brown

This is an artwork of a fantastic, friendly little Westie called Mac.

He’s a lively, happy little thing – content just to trot around, investigating smells, and keen to play with his people and other dogs. I love that this artwork shows him alert, keen, and happy. He’s a confident little thing, always ready to join in.

It’s always special to create an artwork of a happy dog, but what made this pet art even more special was getting to put into art the way that light and colours reflect off his beautiful white fur.

My artwork style is quite colourful in any case, but I chose to put loads of different colours in Mac’s fluffy white fur to show the light reflecting off the soft curls of fur as he moves around, and to show how he’s so lively and full of energy. He looks curious, eager, ready for fun and explorations.

I picked out some of the colours used in his fur for the background, and also emphasized the swirls to echo the texture of his fur.

I thought Mac would enjoy playing in the flowers, outside in the garden. I wanted to keep the background fairly low key, so that Mac stands out well, with all his colours.

As every good Westie owner knows, westies deserve to be the centre of attention! And why not, with those intelligent black eyes lurking behind the fur, and that amazing, silky white fur that contains a whole rainbow of light and colours in the movement and reflections.

Creating Westie Art

I drew Mac from a photo I took when he visited our home – he’s lively, inquisitive, wondering what’s going on. I love how the light shines through his fur in this photo, and wanted to make more of the way light reacts against his beautiful fur.

This artwork is created from pen and ink drawings, put together digitally with an ink-painted fabric background.

I draw each element individually, which allows me to concentrate fully on capturing its form and essence. I then create the final composition from all the elements, digitally.
