Gray Langur Monkey Art - Behind the Scenes

Portrait of a Gray Langur monkey - contemporary wildlife art by Lotti Brown

Gray Langur art by Lotti Brown

This piece of wildlife art was inspired by a beautiful photo of a Gray Langur monkey. It’s such a wonderful and compelling animal portrait that I immediately wanted to make an artwork from it and was able to license the original photo to do so.

This is a Gray Langur monkey, also known as a Hanuman Langur, Indian Langur, or Sacred Langur. It’s an Old World monkey that’s widespread across the Indian subcontinent including: India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Kashmir, Nepal, and the Himalayas.

These monkeys live in all kinds of habitats, from woodlands and forests, rainforests, deserts, mountains, cities, and even in temples. They eat all kinds of foods including leaves, pine needles, pine cones, mosses, ferns, lichens, and bamboo foliage, so I was pretty much able to team my little Langur monkey up with the background of my choice…

Showing detail from the Gray Langur artwork

Showing detail from the Gray Langur artwork

I chose to give him a background of bamboo as I have some in the garden that I can draw from life and I thought I could make very simple line drawings of the bamboo.

I wanted to make this a very simple artwork, with the focus on the Gray Langur monkey in the way of a portrait so that his facial expression was important… what is he thinking?

So I decided to keep the tones and colours very soft and neutral, to complement the beautiful grays in the monkey’s fur, and also to reflect the soft, contemplative gaze of this little animal.

Here’s how I created my Gray Langur portrait from my pen and marker drawings, scanned in and given the digital treatment in Adobe Illustrator…

So here is my completed Gray Langur artwork. The soft colours and simple background put the focus on the monkey and pull attention to his expressive face to make this a portrait full of thoughtful contemplation. He seems almost human, don’t you think?

Arctic Terns Art - Go Behind the Scenes of the Artwork

Colourful and contemporary arctic terns art - beautiful British birds art

Arctic terns artwork by Lotti Brown

Arctic terns artwork by Lotti Brown

I created this beautiful arctic terns art from a dramatic action photo by photographer Julie Hunt, (under license). It’s such a dynamic and elegant composition that as soon as I saw it I just really wanted to capture it in art.

Arctic terns aren’t very local to me, although I have enjoyed seeing them on visits to Northumbria where they nest on the Farne Islands. I feel quite a connection with arctic terns since I’ve loved them since I was a little girl learning about birds…

Aged 8 or 9, I rather excitedly borrowed a book from the school library that I thought was entitled ‘The Arctic Tern’ and I was so looking forward to finding out more about the adventures of this bird from the far-flung Arctic… and was disappointed to discover that I’d actually borrowed a book of school-days tales (The Attic Term)…

If it had been the book I was hoping for, I might have learned that the arctic tern actually migrates between the Arctic and the Antarctic and back each year… it’s the bird species with the longest migration in the world and is believed to be very long-lived with a recorded example of a ringed bird living to almost 30 years of age.

It experiences two summers each year (choosing the light summer months for its stay at each end of the earth) so gets more daylight than any other species too. How’s that for an amazing life!

A pretty awesome little bird and, as you can see, so elegant in flight. Its common name is the sea swallow and you can understand why with those beautiful swooping wings and curved tail!

Beautiful blue, 'Darling Delphiniums' artwork...

'Darling Delphiniums' colourful floral artwork by Lotti Brown

I just love the beautiful blue of delphinium flowers - they're like nothing else in the garden and stand out like towering blue beacons with that brilliantly bold mix of blue and purple...

Awesome flowers - and I knew I wanted to include the pure and simple joy of seeing delphiniums in my 'Joyful Blooming' floral art collection.

Behind the Scenes of the Artwork

Here's how I created my delphinium artwork from my individual flower drawings that I put together in Adobe Illustrator to create the final artwork piece...

I really wanted to make the most of the delphiniums' beautiful purple and blue colours in my artwork but also to put into my art a little of the sizzling heat we experienced in the Summer 2018 heatwave in the UK.

Detail from the artwork

The air feels so dry and still that it almost crackles and the earth is parched - the flowers still seem to bloom with all their might so that their beauty can carry on through another summer and continue to survive the elements...

Woodpigeon Art - Behind the Scenes

artworks, behind the scenes, drawings, inspiration, nature art, bird art, wildlife artCharlotte BrownComment

Sweet and beautiful ‘Loving Woodpigeons’ art print…

‘Loving Woodpigeons’ art by Lotti Brown

‘Loving Woodpigeons’ art by Lotti Brown

I’ve so been enjoying watching wood pigeons in my garden this year - rather plump, but slow-moving and essentially gentle birds with the most amazing pinks, purples, greens and greys in their feathers…

I love to see them gently scrat for food and return to their nest, where they call out gently to other birds in the vicinity…

I think we all have our own pair of woodpigeons in our street, and actually, we do have two pairs here… one pair for our front garden and one for our back garden (there’s sometimes a show of strength on the roof as it’s an incredibly small garden, but generally they do seem to get on fine).

I love the old-fashioned name for the woodpigeon - ring doves - due to the the circular white ‘ring’ at their neck…

Detail from the woodpigeons (ring doves) artwork

Detail from the woodpigeons (ring doves) artwork

I think the name ‘pigeon’ has perhaps been tarnished in all of our minds, a little, by city pigeons who are noisy, busy, and fast - and have often arrived close to my head in a scare-inducing fluster of feathers and sharp bits…

So I love the idea of these pretty, plump and gentle woodpigeons as lovey-dovey ring doves…

And I think this artwork of two ‘Loving Woodpigeons’ together really shows how sweet it is that they’re always in pairs, sat together, grooming each other or cooing to each other… it’s quite lovely to see!

Behind the Scenes of the Woodpigeons Artwork

So I wanted to show you what happens behind the scenes of the creation of an artwork - I draw out all the parts of the artwork with pens on card and then scan it into the computer and put it all together digitally… and give it a few tweaks to get it looking good…

I really wanted to use soft, muted colours in this artwork to accentuate the beautiful pinks and purples of the woodpigeons’ feathers and giving a gentle, loving feeling to the whole artwork…

Red Campion and Buttercups Wildflower Art - Behind the Scenes

artworks, behind the scenes, joyful blooming, inspiration, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

Beautiful wildflowers - Red and Pink Campion flowers nestle with vibrant yellow buttercups for a colourful spectacle of summertime in the countryside... 'The Flowers at Fox Corner' artwork...

pink_yellow_wildflowers_art_lottibrown.jpg

The inspiration for this artwork was the beautiful Red and Pink Campions (Silene) that I see every day in the spring and summer on my dog walk. They explode out of the grassy verges along the field pathways - the deep magenta pink of the Red Campion, and the lighter blush of the Pink Campion...

The deeper magenta pink of the Red Campion (looking out from Fox Corner)

But my favourite place to see them is a shady nook that my husband and I call Fox Corner, where they blossom and bloom, bright twinkles of colour against the deep green, jostling for space with golden buttercups...

Wildflowers at Fox Corner

Wildflowers at Fox Corner

We've never seen a fox at Fox Corner - but there used to be a sandy bank here, filled with tall, pink foxgloves, with an animal hole, that we always said used to belong to the foxes (because of their fox-gloves)...

It's a lovely, shady spot with a dark pool, set back from the footpath, with trees overhanging (where we've seen treecreepers and woodpeckers). There are still a few foxgloves further back, but what caught the eye and the imagination this year was the colourful combination of Pink and Red Campion and yellow buttercups against the green.

But, for me, my Joyful Blooming collection also has a much more personal resonance...

Joyful Blooming art collection - floral art

Joyful Blooming art collection - floral art

It's about when we come into our own, having the confidence to bloom in our own true colours and with all our energy - for ourselves and for others - being the best we can be, even if we're perhaps not as tall as some others, as bright, as strong, or as beautiful...

And trusting that we can share something of what makes us uniquely beautiful in our own way, so that this might inspire joy to others and even to ourselves.

Hollyhocks art print by Lotti Brown

It's taken me so long to feel able to start to grow as myself and to bloom.

I've also had to learn to prioritise my own self care so that I can use my precious energies for my blooming…

Making self care important isn't about standing alone but in finding those places where you can flourish and bloom together, like a beautiful garden.

Beautiful flowers, all different, enrich our lives

Beautiful flowers, all different, enrich our lives

It's a personal journey for us all, but everyone benefits when we each bloom in our own special way.

Creating this collection has actually required far more deep soul searching than I would ever have imagined)... and I thought it was just going to be all about pretty flowers!!

Ultimately, I've learned that the blooming requires a quiet time, a fallow time, a growing, a nurturing, maturing, recovery and recuperation, and an acceptance of the quiet of not-blooming, just as much as the confidence to 'just bloom'.

The tawny owl is the dark and mysterious one of our British owls - quite common but rarely seen. She is mistress of the night and master of disguise with her dark wings beating unseen in the black of the night and just her distinctive hooting echoing and letting you know that she's somewhere near...

I sometimes catch a dark shadow but see the tawny owl so less frequently than the snowy white barn owl who I often see even in daylight.

My beautiful, sleek, wet otter is surrounded by vibrant marsh marigolds, reeds and grasses to give a colourful artwork with a really watery feel.

I was inspired by a favourite film as a child: 'Ring of Bright Water' which tells the beautiful story of Gavin Maxwell's experiences of life in Scotland with an adopted otter.

I wanted the splashes of colour in the otter's fur to look like the sparkles of light and water from the film - and for the flowers and foliage to evoke those idyllic highland streams and ponds where the otter would play and swim - a little moment of tranquillity almost stood still in time.

I also remember an amazing experience from a few years ago, stood watching an otter play on the island of Jura in Scotland...

With my husband, I spotted the otter on the shoreline from the car and we pulled over and got out the car to watch her eat a meal of fish - she saw us but had no fear and stayed to continue her feast - an awesome and unforgettable sight that I feel privileged to have experienced.

'Summer Stoat' artwork by Lotti Brown

With the beautiful greens and soft russets of summer, this is a sweet and gentle depiction of a wonderfully inquisitive little stoat.

I'm only rarely lucky enough to spot a stoat out in the wilds, but we were privileged to have one move into our garage one winter, so I know they're nearby, just keeping out of sight.

I love the warmth of summer and the smell of fresh grass that seems to emanate from this picture - and I love the sense of connection we get from this unique moment of eye contact... of being-to-being connection that the artwork gives us.
