Wisteria is always one of my favourite flowers and I love to see it tumbling over arches and climbing up homes and porches...

It's such a beautiful and romantic flower and actually symbolises love, devotion, long life and memory, quiet reverence and tenderness as well as good fortune, especially signifying new beginnings...

I opt to change this quite pretty green to a softer and more romantic lemon and add a fabric background that shows off a pretty pink blush through the colour - far more delicate and suited to a tale of tenderness and devotion...

I really wanted my wisteria artwork to give a sense of the delicate tendrils of wisteria moving gently in the breeze and to have that elegant and light curve to the tumbling blooms...

I love the open space at the bottom of the artwork which gives that sense of flowers above and around you, while you walk through a fragrant archway...

Awesome flowers - and I knew I wanted to include the pure and simple joy of seeing delphiniums in my 'Joyful Blooming' floral art collection.

Red Campion and Buttercups Wildflower Art - Behind the Scenes

Beautiful wildflowers - Red and Pink Campion flowers nestle with vibrant yellow buttercups for a colourful spectacle of summertime in the countryside... 'The Flowers at Fox Corner' artwork...

pink_yellow_wildflowers_art_lottibrown.jpg

The inspiration for this artwork was the beautiful Red and Pink Campions (Silene) that I see every day in the spring and summer on my dog walk. They explode out of the grassy verges along the field pathways - the deep magenta pink of the Red Campion, and the lighter blush of the Pink Campion...

The deeper magenta pink of the Red Campion (looking out from Fox Corner)

But my favourite place to see them is a shady nook that my husband and I call Fox Corner, where they blossom and bloom, bright twinkles of colour against the deep green, jostling for space with golden buttercups...

Wildflowers at Fox Corner

Wildflowers at Fox Corner

We've never seen a fox at Fox Corner - but there used to be a sandy bank here, filled with tall, pink foxgloves, with an animal hole, that we always said used to belong to the foxes (because of their fox-gloves)...

It's a lovely, shady spot with a dark pool, set back from the footpath, with trees overhanging (where we've seen treecreepers and woodpeckers). There are still a few foxgloves further back, but what caught the eye and the imagination this year was the colourful combination of Pink and Red Campion and yellow buttercups against the green.

As part of my Joyful Blooming floral art collection, I wanted to create a traditional floral rose artwork... but in my own style...

I love roses - the delicate petals, the velvety touch, and the delicious fragrance and when we moved into our country cottage, over a decade ago, I chose some beautiful, proper old-fashioned English roses for our garden. So, of course, I wanted to draw our own roses for my rose-inspired artwork...

I wanted to capture something about their elegance, their delight, their sweetness, freshness and openness that makes them the very essence of Joyful Blooming - I hope that I've achieved some of that...!

Joyful Blooming - New Art Collection

I love looking at and drawing flowers - the delicacy, the colours, their beauty and their energy to bloom and shine.

Drawing flowers

But, for me, my Joyful Blooming collection also has a much more personal resonance...

Joyful Blooming art collection - floral art

Joyful Blooming art collection - floral art

It's about when we come into our own, having the confidence to bloom in our own true colours and with all our energy - for ourselves and for others - being the best we can be, even if we're perhaps not as tall as some others, as bright, as strong, or as beautiful...

And trusting that we can share something of what makes us uniquely beautiful in our own way, so that this might inspire joy to others and even to ourselves.

It's taken me so long to feel able to start to grow as myself and to bloom.

I've also had to learn to prioritise my own self care so that I can use my precious energies for my blooming…

Making self care important isn't about standing alone but in finding those places where you can flourish and bloom together, like a beautiful garden.

Beautiful flowers, all different, enrich our lives

Beautiful flowers, all different, enrich our lives

It's a personal journey for us all, but everyone benefits when we each bloom in our own special way.

Creating this collection has actually required far more deep soul searching than I would ever have imagined)... and I thought it was just going to be all about pretty flowers!!

Ultimately, I've learned that the blooming requires a quiet time, a fallow time, a growing, a nurturing, maturing, recovery and recuperation, and an acceptance of the quiet of not-blooming, just as much as the confidence to 'just bloom'.

Sunflowers Art Print - Behind-the-Scenes

artworks, behind the scenes, color, inspiration, shopping, sneak peek, drawings, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I'm sharing a behind-the-scenes look at my colourful and intricate Sunflowers art print... an artwork that will drench you in summer sunshine and joy! :)

Sunflowers - by Lotti Brown

For me, this is an artwork full of the colours, sounds and smells of Summer – I always love that time of year when, after weeks and weeks of climbing and growing, the sunflowers bloom…

They work so hard to grow as tall as they possibly can, and not only do they manage to look bright, bold and beautiful and spread cheer, but they also store up fat little seeds of nourishment for birds and mice throughout the winter…

What a wonderful flower!

Sunflower

I bet you grew sunflowers when you were a child didn’t you? Did any grow massively tall and make you proud?

For me, sunflowers feel full of hope, working hard and reaching for the sky, and always with a smile on their flowery-faces – what’s not to admire! :)

Sunflowers are beautiful in gardens (if you have the space!) but this work was actually inspired by one summer when the field near our home was filled with big, beautiful sunflowers, growing thick and yellow amongst the maize.

The same field, filled with flowers on a sunny October day in 2017.

The same field, filled with flowers on a sunny October day in 2017.

Such a fantastic surprise to see, and something more akin to the south of France than Yorkshire! Who could fail to feel their heart lift with joy at such a sight…

So I hope my sunflowers will make your heart lift with joy too, to see them, and know they’re jam-pack filled with the colours and sunshine of summer, to give you nourishment through the winter months…

Foxgloves Floral Art Print - Behind the Scenes

artworks, behind the scenes, drawings, shopping, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I'd love to take you on a behind-the-scenes tour of my 'Fun with Foxgloves' floral art print - this is actually my husband's favourite of all my artworks, and we have a print hanging in the kitchen.

This artwork is about those cool, shady moments in the heat of summer - refreshing woodland glades that are like a little oasis of cool on the hottest summer day...

'Fun with Foxgloves' art print

I was inspired by seeing a collection of beautiful bright pink foxgloves, in a wooded area filled with a dappled sunlight - little insects were buzzing about and catching the light, like tiny twinkles of dust...

It was a peaceful place - but at the same time buzzing with life - and those foxgloves stood out so beautifully against the green of the long grasses, ferns and trees...

Vibrant pink of foxgloves in nature

So I wanted to try and capture that moment of stepping out of the sunlight, into the cool forest glade... and how, out the darkness, the hot pink of the foxglove catches your eye... like a hidden treasure that you just have to step off the beaten track to find. Beautiful!

Of course, I couldn't go around picking wild foxgloves, so I bought a garden foxglove to draw...

(Click below to see the images large-size)

I drew it several times, from every angle, and at every stage of growth and flowering...

In the end I decided to completely change the colours, so that I got the feel of those beautiful pink foxgloves in a wooded glade that had originally caught my attention...

Of course, the beauty of working digitally from original drawings is that I'm not tied into the original colour scheme - so I could certainly go pink if I wanted to...

Foxgloves looking pretty in pink!

Finally happy with the colour, I added in more background layering, with some silhouettes, to give more of the feel of the forest background.

Remembering - Poppies Floral Art Print

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, shopping, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I'm taking a behind-the-scenes look at one of my favourite floral art prints, 'Remembering' which combines beautiful poppies and forget-me-not flowers, in a cottage-garden scene with a theme of remembering.

'Remembering' Poppies floral art print, by Lotti Brown

This artwork was actually inspired by my own cottage garden, which in late-Spring and early-Summer is filled with self-seeded poppies and forget-me-nots.

I love the wild, but tranquil, feel - and I love the way that these two flowers, which both have a meaning of remembering have grown together, intertwining...

The flowers make me think of fond memories of family members who loved their gardens so much, and I hope that they would have loved these flowers, too.

Drawing poppies and forget-me-nots gathered from my own cottage garden

I started the artwork with my drawings of the individual flowers. As they were flowers from my own garden, and in plentiful supply, I was able to bring them inside to draw.

Once I'd got them drawn out in pen and ink, I was able to scan them into the computer...

Drawings scanned in, and separated from the paper background, ready as motifs for the design

And start tweaking colours, making them brighter, bolder, and creating more depth and interest.

I like the background in pale blue (see below) - when you look at the real garden, it looks like a sea of soft blue from the tiny forget-me-nots, with bright pops of colour from the poppies, so I wanted my artwork to reflect this too...

A little more tweaking to background colours, and the flowers themselves

There's lots of intricate detail and delicate linework in this design, which I love - it looks great printed up large...

Detail of the finished artwork 'Remembering'

I think the lovely soft blues help with the gentle feel of this artwork - and the feeling of remembering - slightly muted from the distance of time, but with those big pops of cheery colour - happy memories that blaze out.

I wonder what memories it can conjure up for you..?

Summer Floral Art Prints - A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, inspiration, new collections, shopping, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

Behind the scenes of my floral art print 'A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)'

Now the spring is finally here I'm looking forward with hope to the hot sunshine days of summer...

Last summer we had some gorgeously hot days - one of which was the inspiration behind my vibrant summery floral art print 'A Day in the Sun (Geraniums)'.

A Day in the Sun (Geraniums) floral art print

It was created on one of these (rare in Britain!) sun-soaked days - when the world feels a little bit hazy - all buzzy with bees, heady with floral scents and where you just long to get out of the house or office and head to the nearest park or garden...

I'd been drawing some of the pretty flowers in my cottage garden - hardy geraniums and salvias - I love them for the scent of the leaves, and for the way they grow enthusiastic, straggly and free to fill my garden with life and colour...

Click the images below to see them larger...

Getting my drawings vectorised and into the computer programme

Once I got them scanned into the computer, the only possible colour I could choose to convey the sunshine of a fantastically hot summer's day was this brilliant, shining yellow...

Yellow for sunshine and summer

I had to work hard on the colours to make them sizzle with summer heat though...

Stronger colours help to convey the heat of summer

I think the more saturated colours help to show the intense heat, and create the shimmer of colour, buzzing, heat and scent that pervades the senses in a lively summer cottage garden...

Final artwork on the screen

Detail of the flowers in the artwork, showing the intricate, hand-drawn linework

I absolutely love the hand-painted fabric artwork that I chose to use for the background of this piece... full of colour and summer promise - I think the marks look just like flowers in the cottage garden, or little butterflies and bees zipping about in the air...

Hand painted fabric used subtly as a background for the design.

I really hope that my geraniums and salvias artwork transports you into that summer garden - stop a while, put your feet up, sip a nice cuppa - breathe in the scent of the flowers, listen to the bees, and above all let your eyes soak in the colourful experiences of summer....

Floral Meadows Art Prints - Part 2 'Morning Walk'

artworks, behind the scenes, color, drawings, inspiration, new collections, shopping, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I'm taking a behind the scenes look at a pair of artworks I created , inspired by the beautiful summer meadows filled with grasses and flowers near my home.

Last year walking through these natural masterpieces, each morning with my dog, I was so struck by how pretty they were, how uplifting, and how brim-packed full of life and energy the fields, verges and hedgerows were - that I wanted to create some artworks, to bring this energy and joy back into my home - and to share it with you...

I took a closer look at Dandelion Dawn in the last blog post, so this week I'll be turning my attentions to the beautiful 'Morning Walk' artwork.

I created these about the same time, and had the same ideas and thoughts in my mind - wanting to create a wild flower meadow to capture that fresh uplifting feeling of a morning walk in the summer fields...

Detail of my Morning Walk artwork

Morning Walk is created from drawings of pretty purple scabious flowers, that used to be quite common wildflowers in the countryside, but that I now have growing in my garden.

As I have easy access to them, I was able to make lots of drawings...

Pretty purple scabious flowers, drawings

Buds and seedheads make interesting shapes to go with the attractive flowers

I scan all my drawings in, and pull them across into Adobe Illustrator to vectorise them, so that I can easily make them larger or smaller, and change the colours, so that I can allow my artwork to develop just how I want...

Scabious wildflowers, creating a pattern for the meadow layout

First I work a little on creating the meadow layout, with the flowers packed full, so that we can feel it overflowing with energy and life...

Then I start experimenting with the colours... making them a little bolder...

Might make a nice pattern

This would make quite a nice pattern I think, but for the wildflower meadow feel, we really need to go multi-coloured, so we can feel the sense of movement, energy and joy...

It takes quite a long time to adjust colours on all the individual flowers and leaves ...

It can be quite frustrating getting it right, but the satisfaction when you succeed in creating the look you want is wonderful :)

I wanted to use blues and greens in this artwork, as they signify the fresh, cool feeling you get in the early morning in summer, before the day heats up - a nice refreshing way to start the day.

The blues and greens are blended with lots of purples and pinks, as I really wanted to keep a sense of the purples in the original flowers, and from my original drawings.

The splash of citrine gives it a bit of 'oomph' - some wonderful energy and joy to get going.

Morning Walk, seen on the screen

When you look closely at the final artwork, you will see how the background shifts shade subtly so that soft, rich purples, blues and greens blend one into the other...

This is a technique I love to use in my artworks and designs. It is created by hand painting onto fabric with inks, then using this scanned fabric painting as the background for my art piece, with colours adjusted digitally.

Have a look, and see which of my artworks you can spot this technique in.

So, anyway, here is the finished 'Morning Walk' artwork... I hope it makes you feel like you're enjoying a early morning walk in a beautiful meadow of flowers...

Floral Meadows Art Prints - Part 1 'Dandelion Dawn'

behind the scenes, color, drawings, new collections, shopping, artworks, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

Taking a Behind the Scenes Look...

The countryside is starting to come to life these last couple of weeks - greening over the seas of mud, and with just a few little flowers peeping through...

It's wonderful to think that those dark, damp winter days are pretty-much behind us now, and we can look forward to lush greenery, wildflowers and listening to the birds singing...

One of my favourite fields to walk through has been 'out of action' over the last few months - the stile is sat with its feet under water! But I can't wait to see it in a few weeks when it has all dried up and filled with beautiful grasses and flowers...

This field, together with many of the adjoining hedgerows and verges, was the inspiration for two of my artworks, which I created to bring a summer-time floral meadow to mind...

I'll be concentrating on Dandelion Dawn in this post, and next week will be taking a closer look at Morning Walk.

One of the joys of living out in the countryside is those early morning dog walks through these fields...

They feel truly alive, with tiny floral jewels of colour amongst the grasses, soft movement as the breeze catches the taller stalks, and shakes the flowers below... and of course the tuneful buzzing of dozens of bees and other insects.

What a wonderful way to start the day! And a feeling I want to bring to you too, with my artworks...

Detail of my artwork 'Dandelion Dawn'

To create my piece Dandelion Dawn I concentrated on those colourful and confident wild flowers that many like to think of as 'weeds'... dandelions...

For several weeks every year they turn the countryside into a blaze of joyful colour - I always think they are trying to fight back from their undeserved 'weed' status, and take over the world to spread some spring-time happiness. I love them!

So, of course, I drew them....

Flowers and leaves...

Dandelion leaves - I love the curvy shapes in the leaves

I also decided to draw some buttercups, and some daisies from my garden - all very pretty and colourful wild flowers, but sometimes thought of as weeds, simply because they're so successful...

Beautiful buttercups and daisies

I create my final artworks in Adobe Illustrator on the computer, so I got all my drawings scanned in, and vectorised, and started playing about with arranging them together on the screen.

Working on my dandelion artwork, on the computer

I wanted to convey the beautiful bold colours that seemed to jostle about in the field of wild flowers, so I got really playful and confident with the colours in my artwork...

Trying out some bolder colours

At this stage I normally just 'play' and try things, until I find something that makes my heart beat a little faster....

I wanted to really celebrate this lovely, rich, vibrant green colour - it makes me think of how very green the countryside is in late Spring/early Summer, and how this feels so fresh, new and energising, each year.

Once I'd got some colours I was basically happy with, it's time to play about a bit more with the layout...

Creating the idea of a floral meadow with the layout

This is where I could really create the idea of a wildflower meadow, with flowers amongst the grasses, spreading as far as they eye could see.

Building up the layers of flowers and leaves

This is quite a time consuming process, positioning each individual flower carefully, and moving them between layers so that they overlap only where they should, and the pretty flower bits aren't completely obscured by the stalk of the one on top!

I feel like I'm planting a garden as I arrange the flowers

I normally work on the background last...

The background adds a sense of depth to the artwork...

Finally, after many tweaks of position, and colour, it all comes together...

Dandelion Dawn, seen on the screen

As lovely as it looks on the screen, I always feel it only really comes to life when it's printed out and ready to put on the wall...

Tropical Design Trend - Behind the Scenes

behind the scenes, color, drawings, new collections, sneak peek, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I've been working to design for future print and pattern trends coming in Spring-Summer 2017 - and I've been looking at brilliantly coloured tropical trends with the design community at 'Pattern Observer'

I'm going to take you behind the scenes, just a little bit, and show you how some of these designs came about...

Tropical Jungle collection by Lotti Brown - click on the image to see a larger version

I decided to create a small tropical collection, 'Tropical Jungle', for the theme, with my motifs centred around some fantastically colourful orchids I have at home...

Gorgeous orchids were one of the main inspirations to this collection

I drew these many times from every different angle, and drawing both the individual blooms, and whole stems, and separate leaves and foliage to create enough motifs for the collection...

I also wanted some birds in my jungle, so drew some tropical-looking birds from artist source-books, so that I could also add these into the design...

Bird and flower drawings for my tropical collection

Although the colours you see here usually don't end up in the final design, I like to colour my drawings as this gives depth and texture to the design, and often creates the starting point for my colour palette, too.

How some of my orchid drawings developed into the completed pattern

In the image above, you can see how my drawings are scanned into the computer, in colour, then arranged about the screen, using Adobe Illustrator, to create the pattern.

You can see how the original colours (left) were enhanced to become the very vibrant hues in the later part of the design process (right)...

Individual colours, and the whole colour palette, can be tweaked many times until I'm happy with the effect.

I built out the collection with drawings of peace-lilies, and  the foliage of the 'lipstick plant', (both of which I have as houseplants at home) to create a collection of patterns that I felt continued the theme but gave a bit of variety too.

So here are the finished designs - click on the images below to see them larger...

New Geranium Designs

announcements, drawings, new collections, nature art, floral artCharlotte BrownComment

I just wanted to show you my new geranium design...

This is a pretty geranium with ornamental leaves, and wonderful delicate flowers, balanced on long, graceful stems. It sits on my studio windowsill, bringing me a little reminder of summer...

Red-leaved geraniums design

I drew out all the leaves and flowers, individually, with pen on paper, then hand coloured in ink, before taking it into Adobe Illustrator to play about with it, and create the finished design...

Do you remember these leaves I was drawing several weeks ago..?

Some of my geranium leaf drawings, the ones that ended up in this design are the bright red ones, seen slightly beneath the pile of drawings in the large image.

Well, this is how they ended up...

You can find this geranium artwork design in my art store plus at my additional stockists including in my Redbubble store and Displate store.
