Taking a Behind the Scenes Look...

The countryside is starting to come to life these last couple of weeks - greening over the seas of mud, and with just a few little flowers peeping through...

It's wonderful to think that those dark, damp winter days are pretty-much behind us now, and we can look forward to lush greenery, wildflowers and listening to the birds singing...

One of my favourite fields to walk through has been 'out of action' over the last few months - the stile is sat with its feet under water! But I can't wait to see it in a few weeks when it has all dried up and filled with beautiful grasses and flowers...

This field, together with many of the adjoining hedgerows and verges, was the inspiration for two of my artworks, which I created to bring a summer-time floral meadow to mind...

I'll be concentrating on Dandelion Dawn in this post, and next week will be taking a closer look at Morning Walk.

One of the joys of living out in the countryside is those early morning dog walks through these fields...

They feel truly alive, with tiny floral jewels of colour amongst the grasses, soft movement as the breeze catches the taller stalks, and shakes the flowers below... and of course the tuneful buzzing of dozens of bees and other insects.

What a wonderful way to start the day! And a feeling I want to bring to you too, with my artworks...

Detail of my artwork 'Dandelion Dawn'

To create my piece Dandelion Dawn I concentrated on those colourful and confident wild flowers that many like to think of as 'weeds'... dandelions...

For several weeks every year they turn the countryside into a blaze of joyful colour - I always think they are trying to fight back from their undeserved 'weed' status, and take over the world to spread some spring-time happiness. I love them!

So, of course, I drew them....

Flowers and leaves...

Dandelion leaves - I love the curvy shapes in the leaves

I also decided to draw some buttercups, and some daisies from my garden - all very pretty and colourful wild flowers, but sometimes thought of as weeds, simply because they're so successful...

Beautiful buttercups and daisies

I create my final artworks in Adobe Illustrator on the computer, so I got all my drawings scanned in, and vectorised, and started playing about with arranging them together on the screen.

Working on my dandelion artwork, on the computer

I wanted to convey the beautiful bold colours that seemed to jostle about in the field of wild flowers, so I got really playful and confident with the colours in my artwork...

Trying out some bolder colours

At this stage I normally just 'play' and try things, until I find something that makes my heart beat a little faster....

I wanted to really celebrate this lovely, rich, vibrant green colour - it makes me think of how very green the countryside is in late Spring/early Summer, and how this feels so fresh, new and energising, each year.

Once I'd got some colours I was basically happy with, it's time to play about a bit more with the layout...

Creating the idea of a floral meadow with the layout

This is where I could really create the idea of a wildflower meadow, with flowers amongst the grasses, spreading as far as they eye could see.

Building up the layers of flowers and leaves

This is quite a time consuming process, positioning each individual flower carefully, and moving them between layers so that they overlap only where they should, and the pretty flower bits aren't completely obscured by the stalk of the one on top!

I feel like I'm planting a garden as I arrange the flowers

I normally work on the background last...

The background adds a sense of depth to the artwork...

Finally, after many tweaks of position, and colour, it all comes together...

Dandelion Dawn, seen on the screen

As lovely as it looks on the screen, I always feel it only really comes to life when it's printed out and ready to put on the wall...

Next week I'll be taking a closer look at the companion piece to this artwork - Morning Walk - which is also inspired by the pretty wildflower meadows close to my home. (EDIT: You can now read this here...)
